Patiala: BJP MP from Amritsar Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday demanded an immediate rollback of the fees in private medical colleges in the State. The fee structure was raised by the Punjab government last year. Talking to media persons here he said it was unjustified that the students who came from middle class families of the State were being charged high fees by the private colleges in the State. He, however, welcomed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s decision to form a committee to review the fee structure of private medical colleges. The former Indian cricketer demanded the committee to recommend the Government to scrap the notification of fee hike which was issued on August 3, 2007. He asked the Chief Secretary of Punjab to submit a report at earliest as the Chief Minister has given a week’s time and almost ten days had already passed. “Act fast”He asked the committee to take care of the matter immediately as time was ticking fast for the students who had cleared the Pre-Medical Entrance Test as they had to deposit the fees of second year in this month. Middle class families“We should ask private colleges to charge minimum fees as majority of students who seek admission are from middle class families and cannot afford much,” Mr. Sidhu added. He said middle class families of the country, which constituted 90 per cent of total population, had been severely hit by the price rise and his fight against it will continue. -- PTI
