TAMBARAM: The new system of traffic diversion in Tambaram in connection with the ongoing construction of a road overbridge is causing problems to residents of West Tambaram and motorists.

The most affected were those travelling from Chromepet to Mudichur and Mannivakkam. Usually, vehicles proceeding towards these two places on their way to Padappai and Wallajahbad take a right turn from Grand Southern Trunk Road to enter Gandhi Road. As this junction has been made a ‘one-way,’ vehicles have to go to the old checkpost, take a ‘U’ turn and travel almost the same distance before taking a left on Rajaji Road.

As a result, there were major traffic snarls throughout the day.

K. Jothi, an Irumbuliyur resident for about four decades, said that he had never encountered a traffic snarl as he did on Saturday. “Mudichur Road is cut off owing to excavation work for building the pillars and there is no problem. But why should there be restrictions on travelling on Gandhi Road?” he asked.

A cross section of motorists, West Tambaram residents and even councillors of Tambaram Municipality said the restrictions on Gandhi Road was the root cause for problems witnessed on Saturday and hence they should be removed. They said Gandhi Road was the important link for vehicles from Chromepet going towards Mudichur. Residents blamed government agencies for failing to create suitable riding conditions before enforcing the diversions.

A huge volume of vehicles started using those streets and roads as per the new arrangement, but they were not wide enough. Road width was not increased and there were no specific measures to prevent parking of vehicles on road margins, said N.Kani, a resident of Ranganathapuram in West Tambaram.
