Plan to provide equal opportunity to backward areas in higher education

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Chairman of the University Grants Commission Sukhadeo Thorat has said that major initiatives have been proposed in the current plan period that are “targeted at providing equal opportunities to the backward areas in the country and also expanding the horizon of higher education.”

He was speaking after being conferred an honorary doctorate (Ph.D) by Chancellor of the Gulbarga University and Governor Rameshwar Thakur here on Sunday.

Mr. Thorat said that the Prime Minister, Minister of Human Resources Development and the Union Government were working in towards the new initiatives which will herald a new policy for higher education.

He lauded the efforts of Gulbarga University in particular and other universities of Karnataka in general for their “notable contribution” to the cause of higher education. Gulbarga University had made an extra-ordinary contribution towards taking higher education to most backward areas extending opportunities in higher education to people in backward areas, he said.

Mr. Thakur said: “Universities have an important role to play in the process of transforming India into a vibrant and knowledge-based society. In this endeavour they are expected to emerge as centres for generation, value addition and dissemination of knowledge through imparting quality knowledge.”

Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali said that the State had made great strides in expanding higher education and providing “viable alternatives” for professional education and it deserves to get more funding from the UGC for further expansion of higher education. He pledged support to the UGC’s efforts to further the cause of higher education.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor of Gulbarga University B.G. Mulimane felicitated Mr. Thorat.
