Two workers killed in accident

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Two labourers were killed on Sunday morning as they were laying a pipeline at a construction site at Edachira, near here.

The police said the workers, identified as Ali, 30, hailing from Aluva and Chotan Das, 19, from West Bengal, were killed under sliding rubble as they were digging to lay the pipeline. The bodies were taken to the General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The death of the labourers is the latest in a series of fatal accidents at work sites in and around Kochi where unprecedented construction boom has drawn thousands of workers seeking better wages from States like Tamil Nadu, Orissa, West Bengal and Bihar.

The more recent of the incidents, in September last year, involved migrant labourers from Orissa. Two of them were killed when a building collapsed near Boat Jetty and one suffered serious injuries.
