PUDUKOTTAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) would fight for the cause of restoration of Parliamentary constituency status for Pudukottai district, its founder S. Ramadoss said.

Addressing agriculturists at a “Farmers’ Day” convention organised here on Saturday by various farmers’ associations to pay homage to those who laid down their lives, Dr. Ramadoss referred to one of the resolutions adopted at the convention in this regard and said that his party would fight for the cause.

Dr. Ramadoss advocated the need for the economic uplift of the people living below the poverty line. The responsibility of fixing the prices of agricultural produce should be vested with the farmers, as a lasting solution to the economic problems being faced by the farmers community.

The State, he said, had 22 per cent of its population living below the poverty line. Subsidy or concessions, however large, would not be sufficient to tackle the crisis, he said.

The PMK founder warned that industrialisation should not be at the cost of agricultural activity in the country. Farm lands should not be diverted for non-farm use, lest it should deprive our country of agricultural productivity, he warned.

Former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member S. Tirunavukkarasar said that online trading and brokerage system had crippled agriculture. He advocated the need for expeditious implementation of Coleroon Surplus Diversion Scheme to benefit the farmers of Pudukottai district.
