Talks with fishermen fail, stir continues
C. Jaishankar
RAMANATHAPURAM: The talks initiated by the State government to end the protest by Rameswaram fishermen have failed even as their indefinite strike against the Sri Lanka Navy’s action entered the fourth day on Sunday.
The fishermen have been on strike since July 3 protesting the detention of nearly 300 trawlers with 1,200 fishermen for alleged straying into the Sri Lankan waters on July 2. Though all were released after the intervention of the State and Central governments, the fishermen launched the strike against the “bad treatment” meted out to them, demanding that the governments ensure their rights in the waters off Katchatheevu.
