This Day That Age
India would examine carefully the proposals that would be submitted by Pakistan for a settlement of the ten-year old canal waters dispute at the forthcoming London talks commencing on July 7, it was learnt in New Delhi on July 5. The Indian delegation to the talks is headed by Mr. N.D. Gulati. It was further learnt that India would accept the Pakistan proposals provided (1) they did not reduce India’s share of the waters of the Indus Basin already allotted by the World Bank under its proposals of 1954 and (2) they aimed at the speedy construction of link canals by Pakistan in the most economical manner. Under the Bank proposals of 1954 accepted by India and not accepted by Pakistan hitherto, the waters of the three eastern rivers of the Indus Basin are for the exclusive use of India and India is to pay to Pakistan the cost of the link canals she has to construct for replacing the present supply of ten and half million acre feet of water by India.
