dated July 7, 1958: Gibson wins two titles

Miss Althea Gibson, the American holder of the women’s singles title, failed to win the Triple Crown in the Wimbledon lawn tennis championships which concluded on July 5. Miss Gibson retained the singles title and next won the women’s paired event but lost the mixed doubles though she played for over three hours. Miss Althea Gibson beat Miss Angela Mortimer of Britain 8-6, 6-2, in the singles final.
