NAGAPATTINAM: Cultivation of short-term kuruvai paddy crop has picked up in the Vennar command areas of Nagapattinam, Kilvelur and Vedaranyam taluks in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district where the farmers depend only on river water (surface water) for irrigation. Out of the normal cultivation area of about 35,000 hectares, nearly 20,000 hectares had already been cultivated with the crop in the Cauvery command areas of Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi, Tarangampadi and Kuthalam blocks taking advantage of the groundwater potential in these blocks. The remaining 15,000 hectares will be covered by the Vennar command area in Nagapattinam, Thalainayar, Kilvelur and Vedaranyam blocks where the farmers had started preparing lands and raising kuruvai paddy nurseries. A senior official of the Agriculture Department said that raising of kuruvai nurseries would be completed in a week and transplantation of the seedlings would get over before the month end. He pointed out that the early planted kuruvai paddy crop in Mayiladuturai was ready for harvest in some pockets. A cross-section of farmers told The Hindu that the Nagapattinam district administration took steps and made available the much required fertilizer of DAP (di-ammonium phosphate) through the primary agricultural co-operative banks (PACBs). The district administration had banned private fertilizer merchants and dealers to sell DAP from July 4 in view of the large scale complaints that they were selling DAP at exorbitant rates and some of them were found hoarding the stock.
