Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: In one of the rare instances, three premier institutions in the country — the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram(SCTIMST), the Indian Institute of Technology-Chennai (IIT-Chennai) and the Christian Medical College, Vellore — are joining hands to launch two post-graduate programmes in interdisciplinary areas. Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary to Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, will formally launch the joint degree programmes — M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) and Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology) — on July 8 at 10 a.m. at the Achutha Menon Centre auditorium. “Health care delivery has increasingly become technology-driven. New equipment and devices for diagnosis and therapy have helped to revolutionise the standard and precision of health care, as well as making it possible to treat diseases, which were thought beyond the help of modern medicine. But there is an acute dearth of engineers and technical experts to take care of these devices or to handle the repair works,” Dr. Mohandas pointed out. The degrees will be awarded by the two universities — IIT–Chennai and SCTIMST — on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutions in association with Christian Medical College, Vellore.
