That is Sam Bahadur

National Games were held in the year 1979 in Hyderabad. M. Chenna Reddy was Chief Minister and Raja Ram was the Minister for Sports. Sam Manekshaw was the chief guest to declare the games open. I was one of the organising secretaries. I was dressed in traditional khadi dhoti and upper to receive Sam Manekshaw. When we shook hands, I said: “Sir, I am an ex-soldier.” He came back, looked into my eyes and said: “A soldier will never be an ex.” Even the crowd was restive and behaved irreverently when he stood up to speak. He patiently stood smiling till the crowd became silent and addressed the gathering. That is Sam Bahadur, the soldier.

Discourage plastic use

Now-a-days, many people are using plastic products, particularly plastic bags. Use of polythene bags and other products causes damage to human life, and causes deadly disease cancer. It takes many years for plastic bags to decompose, while incineration of plastic products results in release of poisonous gases. Hence, there is a need to educate the people in this regard. At the same time the government should take stringent measures to control the use of plastic carry bags.

Roads in bad shape

The municipal authorities do not appear serious in maintaining the roads in the city. The condition of roads is so horrible that one cannot even walk, leave alone riding a bicycle. For instance, Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala road is so horrifying that it gets water logged even after a small drizzle. I hope that the authorities would wake up at least now and take up repair works immediately.

Appoint postal agents

To buy even a post card, it has become a hard task for senior citizens, as the post offices are located at far-off places. Keeping this in view, the postal authorities should ensure that postal stationery is available even in street corner shops. For this, they can appoint agents on commission basis. This will help the senior citizens to purchase the postal stationery at easily accessible places.

Political gimmick

Senior leader T. Devender Goud quit the TDP saying injustice is being done to Telangana. And that he cannot be oblivious to it. Goud served as minister for 10 years and also as Polit Bureau member of the TDP. His word was law during 1994-2004. And, it is also well known that the Vajpayee Government at the Centre survived with the support extended by the TDP. So what and who prevented Goud in developing Telangana region in such favourable conditions. In the recent by-elections in Telangana, the polling percentage was 60 out of which TRS got 33.58 per cent, which again works out to be mere 20 per cent. These figures indicate that Telangana sentiment is weak. Hence, injustice to Telangana is just a gimmick of leaders.
