Public cooperation sought for projects

Confrontation will not help: Paloli

Minister lays stone for bridge at Elamkulam

Abattoir at Kaloor renovated

KOCHI: The public and administration should cooperate with each other while implementing development projects, said Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty.

He was speaking after inaugurating a few programmes of the Kochi Corporation here on Sunday.

The statement of the Minister attains significance in the wake of the resistance faced by the district administration and the Kochi Corporation in the implementation of some development projects in Kochi.

The administrations should be sensitive to the issues of the people and steps should be taken for addressing them while implementing the programmes. Confrontations will not help in solving the issues, he said.

Regarding the removal of garbage from the streets of Kochi, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said that everyone should realise the health concerns involved in the issue. The cooperation of the general public is essential for agencies like the Kochi Corporation for the successful implementation of projects, he said.

The administration, on its part, should also take into account the sentiments of the people while going ahead with the projects, he said.

The projects that were inaugurated on Sunday include the construction of a new bridge at Sahodaran Ayyappan road near Elamkulam, second stage of the housing project under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) and the renovated abattoir at Kaloor.

Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams presided over the meeting.

The construction of the bridge will be completed within 18 months. The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank and the expense for the bridge has been estimated as Rs. 3.5 crore.

The BSUP project is being implemented with the support of the funding from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. In the second stage of the project, the Kochi Corporation has managed the support of agencies such as the Kerala Builders Forum for the completion of some dwelling units.

The Forum will support the Corporation in the completion of 24 units at the land purchased by the Corporation at Mundamveli.

The abattoir at Kaloor was renovated as per the directives of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board. An effluent treatment plant was set up at the abattoir spending Rs. 17.5 lakh.

A biogas unit was also established there at an expense of Rs 18 lakh.
