MCD suspends two officers

Staff Reporter

Vigilance probe against them for ‘dereliction of duty’

Irregularities found in appointments of primary school teachers

Application for the posts were admitted even after the last date

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has placed two of its officials under suspension and ordered a vigilance inquiry against them on charges of dereliction of duty.

Municipal Commissioner K.S. Mehra ordered the suspension of Assistant Education Officer of Shahdara (North) Zone Kanta Kumar and Deputy Education Officer Shanti Soren pending the regular departmental action.

Mr. Mehra also directed that the Chief Vigilance Officer of the civic body to conduct a detailed inquiry and fix responsibility for taking appropriate action against the officials.

According to a MCD release, serious irregularities were found in the appointments of primary school teachers on contract basis in the Shahdara (North) zone. “As per the advertisement for the post issued on June 3 this year, the last date for submission of applications was June 16. However, Ms. Kanta Kumar, who was in-charge on June 17 as the Deputy Education Officer of the Zone was on leave, received 902 applications on that day also. Not only that, the Deputy Education Officer, Assistant Education Officer and other supervisory staff also scrutinised the applications received on June 17 and issued appointment orders to some of the candidates.”

It was also found that the officials concerned did not take the approval of the Deputy Commissioner of the Zone who was authorised to approve the list of candidates for engagement on contract basis.

The candidates, who were engaged on the basis of applications received on June 17, have been ordered to be disengaged with immediate effect.

The number of such candidates is being ascertained. Only those candidates whose applications were received till the last date June 16 are being engaged on contract basis.
