G. Benjamin, Migrant labourer: I am from a village in Villupuram district. The returns from my two-acre paddy field were not sufficient to meet expenses. Also, fertilizer costs were high. I came to Chennai looking for work and got a job unloading vegetables in Koyambedu market. Now I have brought my son to work here too. My family depends on the money we send home. My son and I live in the market. Family members cultivate the land and I go whenever required. I also join a group of workers from my district to occasionally visit my village. We hire a lorry, load vegetables to take home and visit our families during festivals.
