COIMBATORE: A 12-member committee headed by Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam will start translating the works of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi into English.

The committee was approved by the Chief Minister on Friday The project with seed money of Rs. 10 lakh will take off this month-end. The completed version is expected to be released on the Chief Minister’s birthday. According to the Vice-Chancellor, many great writings of the Chief Minister were not getting international recognition because they were not in English.

“All his works are world class. But, people from other parts of the world are not able to enjoy them because of language barrier. So, the university has decided to translate his poems, essays and letters. This will give him the exposure that he is truly worthy of,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

The translation is also expected to fulfil the requirement for submitting it for a Nobel prize in literature.

Mr. Thiruvasagam was already involved in the translation of one of the works of the Chief Minister, ‘Tholkapiya Poonga.’ The translated version appeared weekly in an English magazine. “Once it crosses 100 weeks, the translated work will be published in the form of a book and sent abroad.”

The members of the committee – poet Vairamuthu, Agasthiya Lingam, P. Maruthanayagam, V. Murugan, P.K. Palanisamy, Tamilachi Thangapandian, Ramani, Sirpi Balasubramanian, Kayal Vizhi, M. Ravichandran and C. Sivasanmugam – will meet in the third week of July to start the work on the project.
