‘Basketball Without Borders’ leaves an impression

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: As the curtains came down on ‘Basketball Without Borders’ here on Sunday, borders became insignificant in the huge lap of the game that taught each participant to grow not only as a player but a human being too.

The camp provided a huge boost to the trainees who had their skills sharpened by top NBA stars and coaches.

Besides, they learnt camaraderie and lessons on HIV/AIDS prevention.

On the game’s front, the surprise package, however, was the bunch of Indians, who left an impression because of the quality of their game.

“It’s a pleasant surprise to see the standard of the Indian boys. They were better than expected. If the development programme continues, hopefully they will grow as players and represent India,” said Roy Rana, a top coach from Canada participating in the camp.

Rana, who has been in the profession of coaching for the last 12 years, said Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Shadab Khan had the ability to grow as prominent hoopsters.

“Vishesh is one of the better players in the camp, very tall and athletic. Shadab has the body of a basketball player. He may not have the skills, but is a real potential,” the coach of Indian origin said, adding he relished the opportunity to work in the country of his roots.

Sixteen-year-old Vishesh said the Indians were on par with other Asian players and he gained a lot from the camp.

Positive attitude

Another participant, Arjun Singh said he was impressed with the coaches’ positive attitude.

“They don’t ponder about a lost match. They look forward, think about the next match.”

On the concluding day, the NBA stars conducted a clinic for school children at the Siri Fort complex.

Later, the All Stars team played a friendly match that featured top NBA players.
