Bangalore: It was the sight of his aged grandfather, a potter making clay artefacts, that inspired V. Gopal to become an artist. He started making small idols of Ganesha which were an instant hit in his school. He slowly took to doodling, cartooning and photography too and made a career of it. The works of this veteran artist will be on display till July 16 at the Indian Cartoon Gallery in Midford Garden, off M.G. Road. Born in Malur, Kolar district, Gopal was initially self-taught, but was later tutored by the legendary T. Venkatappa. He also took lessons from senior artist M.T.V. Acharya, who he considers a major influence in his life. His cartoons came to be published in all major Kannada newspapers and magazines. Nage Chitragalu, his first collection of sketches, was published in 1982. A second collection is being published this year. Gopal has won many prizes and awards, and drawn cartoons for the world’s largest book brought out by Bangalore Book Publications. His cartoons are mostly political satires.
