Not missing a single beat

Bangalore: “Thalavadyotsav 2008,” the 27th annual percussive arts festival and music conference, will be held from July 9 to 13, at the Bangalore Gyana Samaja on K.R. Road.

The festival is being organised by the Percussive Arts Centre of the Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Arts Centre as part of the birth centenary of Palani Subramanya Pillai. It will include many programmes from lecdems to performances by noted percussionists and vocalists.

Also part of the festival will be presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards. The Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Award is being presented to “mridanga” expert Madurai T. Srinivasan. Mr. Srinivasan, who started his career at the age of five, has been active in film music. He played “mridangam” in the dance ballet recording of Jungle Book composed by Vijaya Raghava Rao for Cleveland Cultural Alliances. The Palani Sumbramany Pillai Birth Centenary Award is being awarded to vocalist D.K. Pattamal, who is the recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the President’s National Award for Carnatic Music. The Bangalore K. Venkataram Memorial Award is being conferred on musicologist R. Sathyanarayana who has also won the Karnataka State Rajyostava Award. The Youth Achievement Awards will be given to N. Vasudeva for “mridangam” and B.S. Arun Kumar for morching and drums. The festival will be inaugurated by Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde.
