‘Live Stock Insurance Scheme, funded by the Centre, will also be implemented’ About 1.25 lakh animals are expected to be insured during this financial year CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced that the State Government has earmarked a sum of Rs.5 crore for the insurance of milch animals of the Scheduled Castes families of the state for the current financial year. The farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes families will benefit free of cost under the Livestock Insurance Scheme as 100 per cent cost of premium of the insurance will be borne by the State Government. Mr. Hooda announced that another Live Stock Insurance Scheme, funded by Central Government, will also be implemented in the State which would cover the milch animals of five districts namely Bhiwani, Rohtak, Jind, Jhajjar and Hisar. About 75,000 milch animals of families belonging to Scheduled Castes were insured during the last financial year on an expenditure of Rs.4 crore under this scheme. Fifty per cent of the insurance premium was borne by the Central Government. The State Government and animal owner paid only 25 per cent of the total cost. The Chief Minister added that the milch animals belonging to the non Scheduled Castes families of the districts other than five districts covered by the Central Government scheme would also be implemented by the State Government during the year 2008-09 in which 75 per cent of the cost of insurance premium would be borne by the State Government and 25 per cent by the owner. About 1.25 lakh animals are expected to be insured during this financial year. Rs.6.75 crore would be spent for providing insurance cover to milch animals under this scheme. He said that an additional Rs.15 crore was likely to be spent for welfare of the farmers annually as far insurance was concerned.
