SEEKING CONSENSUS: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy with Health Minister E. Valsaraj and Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan at a meeting with representatives of private engineering and medical colleges in Puducherry on Monday. PUDUCHERRY: Private engineering colleges in the Union Territory on Monday agreed to allocate 50 per cent of seats under the government quota for the academic year 2008-2009. However, the government failed to arrive at a consensus with private medical colleges on sharing of seats. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy along with Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan and Health Minister E. Valsaraj held talks with representatives of private engineering and medical colleges regarding allocation of seats under government quota for admission to professional courses including B.E. and M.B.B.S. According to official sources, the engineering colleges had agreed to reserve 50 per cent of seats for government quota during the meeting. Last year, a total of 1,539 seats were available under the government quota for engineering, said sources in the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC). As of last year, there are five private engineering colleges in the Union Territory — Bharathiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikal, Sri Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, Regency Institute of Technology, Yanam and Christ College of Engineering and Technology. Two new collegesTwo new private engineering colleges are coming up in Puducherry, official sources said. However, talks with the private medical colleges did not yield results. There are seven private medical colleges in the Union Territory. A total of 311 medical seats were allocated under the government quota last year, officials said. “The medical colleges want to maintain the share of seats allotted last year. “Representatives from Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences and Aarupadai Veedu Medical College did not participate in the meeting. The two institutions are deemed universities. We could not arrive at a concrete decision at the end of the talks,” Health Minister E. Valsaraj said. The government is expected to hold the second level of talks with the medical colleges in a week, he added. Merit listOfficial sources in CENTAC said the merit list for admission to professional courses was likely to be published on July 11 and would be available in the website.
