‘This would lead to increased cooperation by the farmers for wildlife preservation’ Compensation would be given for damage within a radius of 5 kms from forests Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Government has decided to give compensation to farmers tilling lands in forests or within the radius of five kilometres from the forest limits if their crops are damaged by wild animals. “Damage to the crop would be assessed as per the procedure of Revenue Department by its officers. The compensation amount would be paid to the affected farmer by the divisional forest officer,” an official release quoting Forest Minister Kunwar Vijay Singh said. The Minister said that the decision would lead to increased cooperation by the farmers in the department’s efforts for wildlife preservation. Referring to the state government’s recent decision to enhance the financial grant in case of loss of human and cattle heads and property by wild animals, he said so far statutory provisions were existing only for compensation in the case of damage to crop, house or other property by wild elephants. But there were no provision for financial assistance in case crops were damaged by other wild animals, he said adding in the wake of the latest state government decision, now damage to crops in the fields inside or within a radius of five kms from forests would be compensated and financial help given to affected persons as per the provisions of Revenue Book of Circulars. Crop loss assessment would be undertaken by the concerning revenue officers as per the procedures prevalent in the Revenue Department. The details of the crop loss would be made available to the concerning divisional forest officer, who would pay compensation amount to the affected farmer.
