ZP standing committees are yet to be formed

Protest: Members of BJP and MES in Belgaum Zilla Panchayat staging walk-out in Belgaum on Monday.

Belgaum: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in the Belgaum Zilla Panchayat staged a walk out on Monday in protest against the alleged “volte-face” by zilla panchayat president Nazir Ahmed Nadaf on constituting standing committees at the general body meeting.

Led by BJP’s floor leader J.B. Patil, the BJP and MES members walked out of the meeting hall criticising Mr .Nadaf, who belongs to the Congress, for not keeping his promise of appointing at least one BJP member as chairman of one of the five standing committees.

The two BJP MLAs from Belgaum Grameen and Khanapur, Sanjay Patil and Prahalad Remani also joined the protest.

There are five standing committees on Planning and Finance, General Standing, Social Justice, Agricultural and Industrial, and Education and Health.

But, it is more than nine months since the present term of the zilla panchayat headed by Mr. Nadaf commenced on October 1 last, and the standing committees are yet to be constituted, thanks to the political differences and the alleged vested interests controlling the zilla panchayat from outside. However, in its last meeting on March 3, members cutting across party lines decided to set up a committee of senior members from all the political parties under the chairmanship of the president.

Subsequently, the committee would take a fair view and accord representation to all the political parties.

According to J.B. Patil, it was also decided that the at least one of the five committees would have a BJP member as chairman. The BJP and MES together have a total strength of 22 members in the 86-member zilla panchayat.

The party members had been cooperating with ruling party in the interest of development by keeping political differences away.

Yet, the Congress showed its true colour once again, he said.

But, Mr. Nadaf made allegedly refused to respect the unanimous decision taken in the last meeting, he added.
