Doctors say patient can lead normal life with supportive drugs Kakinada: The Apollo Hospitals, Kakinada reached an important milestone in treating the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) when it got the first kidney transplantation done last month on a patient who has been undergoing Hemodialysis for the last two years. The patient A. Venkateswarulu was discharged recently after his kidney was found by the doctors who had operated on him, K. Subrahmanyam and K. Kalyan Ram, to be stable and functioning normally with supportive drugs. Addressing media persons here, Dr. Subrahmanyam said ESRD patients who undergo kidney transplantation can lead normal lives except that they have to be on regular medication to suppress the immune system which could otherwise lead to rejection of the donor’s kidney(s). Patients would also be prone to infections as their immune system is suppressed for the aforementioned purpose. The other two options for treating ESRD, namely Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis, are costly and they cause various health problems (the quality of life would be poor in spite of the continuous purification of blood). MisconceptionsDr. Subrahmanyam said there was a big mismatch in the number of Indians suffering from ESRD and those opting for kidney transplantation due to certain misconceptions about the procedure, success rate, organ donation, medical reasons and financial problems. But, medical science has long ago proven that transplantation was the best method of getting rid of ESRD. Apollo Hospitals medical director C. Suryaprakasa Rao, administrator V Srinivas, nephrologist Dr. D.V.S. Somayajulu and chief anesthetist Dr. H.D. Shenoy were present.
