BERHAMPUR: Two persons allegedly tried to molest the wife of their friend in the city on Sunday night when he refused to be part of their criminal activity. According to the victim and her husband Bikash Mohapatra it was a drastic step to put pressure on Bikash to get involved in thefts again. Basing on the complaints made by the couple police has already taken one Bhaskar Behera into custody. He and the victim were also sent to MKCG Medical College for medical examination. Bikash used to live at Raghupati Nagar area on the outskirts of the city. According to the inspector in charge of the Badabazar police station, P.N. Majhi, who is investigating the case, Bikash had past criminal record. He was part of a gang of thieves and also had several cases of theft pending against him. But since past few months he had left the criminal activities and had started to earn his living by becoming a painter of houses. But his past associates were worried over his change of track as they feared he could turn into a police informer. At around midnight on Sunday, two criminal associates of Bikash allegedly reached his house with some sharp weapons and asked him to join their gang again or face dire consequences. To save himself, Bikash escaped from the house through the backdoor. He ran out and called up a police patrol from the NH 217 to help him. When the police patrol along with Bikash reached his house they found a person guarding the small house while Bhaskar was inside. Bhaskar could be nabbed, while the other man escaped. Bhaskar had raped her, alleged the wife of Bikash. According to her, Bhaskar resorted to it when he could not find Bikash inside the house with the threat that they would impart more tortures on the family if Bikash did not get into the gang again.
