Protection of retail trade demanded

Staff Reporter

‘Sealing drive has affected the trade in Delhi and led to revenue loss’

A letter has been sent to the Prime Minister by Confederation of All-India Traders

NEW DELHI: Following the report of the Fifth Economic Census of Delhi 2005 which says the retail trade is the largest sector in the Capital providing maximum employment to its people, the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) has demanded that the Government come up with policies that protect the retail trade and also provide relief to retailers from sealing.

In a letter written sent to the Prime Minister over the weekend, CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal said the sealing drive had affected the trade in Delhi and in turn it has also led to a revenue loss to the Government.

The letter, copies of which have also been sent to the Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L.K. Advani, Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, also argues that if at all the traders needed to be removed from their current locations for any development programme, it was obligatory on the part of the Government to provide alternative space to them.

Mr. Khandelwal said the large-scale sealing had taken place since 2006 and many establishments continue to remain sealed but the Government had not offered any alternative place for these establishments.

Census findings

He added that in the wake of the census findings, serious steps should be taken to retain the commercial character of Delhi.
