Horticultural workers to stage protest on August 3

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Government Horticultural Farm Workers Association has decided to organise demonstrations and fasts in all district headquarters on August 3 to protest against the “failure” of some of the agricultural department officials to implement the Government Order (no.494, dated November 29, 2007) on regularisation of horticultural workers who have completed 10 years of service as on January 1, 2006.

A resolution was passed at the state executive committee meeting of the association held under the presidentship of J. Chinnaraj, association’s State president said here on Sunday. By another resolution, the association decided that if the officials failed to implement the G.O. even after the agitation on August 3, they would organise fast in front of Fort St. George in Chennai on August 31. If the G.O. was not implemented even after the fast, the State office-bearers would meet in Chennai to decide the next course of action.

The association urged the government to immediately regularise the 44 horticultural farm workers in Kancheepuram district.

It noted that some of the horticultural workers who had completed 10 years of service have been left out in the process of regularisation in view of the mistakes of some officials.

The association requested the government to prepare a list of horticultural workers who have completed 10 years of service as on January 1, 2008 and issue orders for their regularisation.

It urged the government to stop engaging farm workers afresh on daily wage basis in future, and instead, regularise the services of the existing daily wage workers.
