NEW DELHI: Mayors, Municipal Commissioners, information technology service providers and non-government organisations will take part in a three-day meeting, on the role of the Internet in simplifying the function of municipalities, beginning July 29 at Pragati Maidan here. Being organised by the Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies (CSDMS) as part of its information and communication technology meet “eIndia-2008”, “Municipal-IT” is aimed at providing various services including birth and death certificates, sanctioning of building plans, education, information technology, finance, property tax, public grievance, land and estate and vigilance online. “The delegates attending the meet will be discussing ways and means to provide simple, efficient and prompt services to the citizens through the Internet. The stress will be on making e-governance initiatives through its portals and making civic agencies’ offices paperless,” said CSDMS Chairman M.P. Naryanan. The key themes of the conference will be “IT Innovation in Municipalities”, “Role of IT in Establishing Contact with Citizens”, “Speeding up the Work Process”, “Efficient Handling of Work” and “Transparency in Dealing with Citizens”.
