Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has called for strict enforcement of the law which forbids sex determination test of the foetus and female foeticide. The Minister who was chairing a meeting of the State-level advisory committee for health and family welfare here on Monday wanted an awareness programme to be launched against these practices with the help of voluntary organisations. She said that these practices, which were social problems, could not be checked through law alone. They could be checked only though women empowerment, improvement of the social and economic status of girls, effective implementation of the law against dowry and raising of the level of education of girls. She stated that there had been a marked fall in the number of girl children in the country during the last decade. A sharp change in the proportion between male and female children could lead to several social problems, she added.
