Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Law and Sports and Youth Affairs M. Vijayakumar announced in the Assembly on Monday that a comprehensive sports development programme costing Rs.500 crore would be taken up as part of Kerala’s plan for holding the National Games in 2009.

Replying to the debate on the demand for grants pertaining to Sports, the Minister said the Indian Olympic Association and Centre had in principle approved the State’s bid to host the Games. The State would propose the inclusion of boat racing and Kalaripayattu as host items in the Games. A State-level ‘Kerala Games’ would be held as a prelude to hosting of the National Games. The proposed health card scheme for students would be implemented from this year.

He said the State Youth Policy would be presented to the House during the current session.

The government would promote farmers’ clubs to attract youth to the agriculture sector.
