State lagging behind in economic development Bangalore-Mumbai corridor to link 11 districts Bangalore: The State Government is planning to create two “industrial corridors”, one between Bangalore and Mumbai and another from Bangalore and Chennai, Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries Murugesh R. Nirani has said. “The Bangalore-Mumbai corridor alone will link 11 districts and 20 towns, and industrial areas will be created along the route. Karnataka has eight new SEZs on the way, with estimated investments of Rs. 20,000 crore and the potential to create 2.3 lakh jobs,” Mr. Nirani told members of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here on Monday. The Government did not want SEZs on agricultural land and would frame a separate policy for this along with the new industrial policy to be announced within three months, he said. “We are setting up task forces to create special industry parks for biotechnology, information technology, agro food and infrastructure-related industries and we want to promote them at locations beyond Bangalore,” he said. Many sanctioned industrial projects over the past few years did not take off and some lapsed because of the delay in giving clearances by previous governments. Investments“We want to prevent this and bring investments back to Karnataka by speeding up all clearances. Human resources development is getting top priority so that our young people are eligible for the thousands of jobs being created,” he said. FKCCI president D. Muralidhar said the State had lagged behind in economic development in recent years. The State Economic Survey showed Karnataka had logged only 7.8 per cent growth, behind the national estimate of 8.7 per cent. A new approach to taxation, power and other infrastructure could correct this, he added.
