AKKA is a federation of 32 Kannada associations with over 70,000 members It will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year Bangalore: In a concerted effort to promote trade and commerce and strengthen the cultural relationship between the Government of Karnataka and the Government of the United States of America, the Association of Kannada Kootas of America (AKKA) is planning to establish a Kannada Bhavan in the U.S. shortly. Chairman of the AKKA Board of Trustees Amarnath Gowda and president of AKKA Ramesh Gowda told presspersons here on Monday that the proposed Kannada Bhavan would come up in Washington D.C., as agreed while drawing the constitution of AKKA in 1998. The organisation would not seek the State Government’s assistance for constructing the bhavan. But it might seek the State Government’s help to develop infrastructure, they clarified. The proposed bhavan would act as a nerve-centre for promoting industrial, commercial and cultural interests of the State in the U.S. The bhavan would also coordinate with the Kannadigas in North America and the Government of Karnataka for the purpose, they added AKKA played a key role in ensuring an overall business investment of Rs. 1.75 lakh crore to the State from U.S.-based entrepreneurs in recent years. AKKA, which is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, is a federation of 32 Kannada associations with over 70,000 members spread out in various states of the U.S. and Canada. It would hold a three-day fifth world Kannada conference from August 29, 2008, at the Rosemont Convention Centre, close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Minister for Information Katta Subramanya Naidu, Ministers and chairman of the Kannada Development Authority “Mukhyamantri” Chandru would participate in it, they said. Chairman of AKKA’s India Coordination Committee M. Krishnamurthy said the conferences were previously held in Houston (2000), Detriot (2002), Orlando (2004) and Baltimore (2006). The biennial event had been helping in bringing the Kannada community, spread across the world, at one place for three or four days. Besides its social, economic, cultural and charitable objectives, AKKA had established chapters for Kannada youth development, matrimonial platform, women’s forum, and alumni organisations and business seminars, he added.
