Remove deadline for issuing pattas to the poor: CPI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Communist Party of India State secretary D. Pandian on Sunday urged the State government to remove the deadline set for issuing pattas to the poor residing in ‘nattham poramboke’ and land belonging to the Public Works and Revenue Departments.

Addressing a conference to protect the interests of the poor in the Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai Zone, he said the September 30 deadline, set by the government, would lead to eviction.

“The government should issue pattas to all those who reside on government land for more than five years. The issue requires a humanitarian approach and should not be viewed legally,” he said, recalling the concessions given by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi with regard to issuing of pattas to the poor.

Mr. Pandian said that though his party had no difference of opinion with the government on protecting water sources, a rigid attitude in respect of lakes and other waterbodies that had not received water for years was not necessary. Valluvar Kottam and the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court were the two structures that had come up on two lakes, he pointed out.

A separate conference to discuss the issues concerning residents of temple and mutt land will be held in Madurai on July 21.

A resolution moved by the former CPI MLA, A.S. Kannan, demanded water connection, streetlights, electricity, road links and schools for the poor living in government land.

“Let the government desilt all the tanks and lakes in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts and convert them into reservoirs. But issue pattas to those who have occupied the waterbodies that no longer get water,” another resolution said.
