Uttarakhand gets its first Govt. medical college

DEHRA DUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri inaugurated the State’s first Government Medical College in Srinagar (Garhwal) on Monday.

The Rs.242-crore, 380-bed college fulfils a long cherished dream of the local people who had got the college sanctioned after a long agitation of which Mr. Khanduri himself was a leading figure.

Announcing that all-out efforts would be made to make the college a centre of excellence, Mr. Khanduri said it would be mandatory for the doctors graduating from here to put in some service in the hills so that the medical needs of the people living in remote terrains could be fulfilled.

A similar college would be set up in Almora also to meet the needs of the Kumaon region, the Chief Minister announced.

Praising the work being done by the recently launched ‘108 emergency ambulances’, Mr. Khanduri said 90 such ambulances would be introduced soon in the entire State to provide immediate help to patients as well as victims of accidents, fire and other emergencies.

Services of these ambulances can be had by dialling the toll free number 108.

The Government is also going to introduce a mobile hospital worth Rs.1 crore in every district so that people living in far-off places could get medical aid nearer home.

Applauding the Government’s efforts, the Leader of the Opposition, Harak Singh Rawat, said he hoped action would also be taken to provide medical aid from several remote primary health centres which were running without doctors, staff or medicines for years.
