Corrections and clarifications

The eighth paragraph in a report “Mulayam terms Advani opportunistic” (July 7, 2008) was “At a press conference, which he jointly addressed along with Mr. Advani, Mr. Jaswant Singh had said he visited Amar Singh’s residence four ago back to see “which way wind is blowing in the Samajwadi Party.” It was an editing error. The unedited sentence in the PTI report was “At a press conference he jointly addressed along with BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate L.K. Advani, Jaswant Singh had said that he had visited Amar Singh’s residence four days back to see “which way wind is blowing in the Samajwadi Party”.

The first paragraph of a report “Sunita Williams receives Padma Bhushan” (Internet edition, July 5, 2008, 3.55 p.m.) was “Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the feat of completing the longest space flight for a woman, received the Padma Bhushan — India’s second highest civilian award — here [Houston] for her outstanding achievements.” Padma Bhushan is third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after Bharat Ratna (the highest civilian honour) and Padma Vibhushan. Padma Shri is fourth. (We had issued a similar clarification on March 22, 2006.)

A sentence in the third paragraph of an article “Changing interpretations of early Indian history” (Editorial page, June 30, 2008) was “The Archaeological Survey of India, established in 1871, has over the decades made important contributions to unearthing and analysing the material remains of India’s past.” The Archaeological Survey of India clarifies that it was established in 1861.

The results column in a report “Venus Williams wins her fifth Wimbledon” (“Sport”, July 6, 2008) said “Men’s doubles: Final: 2-Daniel Nestor & Nenad Zimonjic bt 8-Jonas Bjorkman 7-6(12), 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3.” It should have been “Daniel Nestor & Nenad Zimonjic bt Jonas Bjorkman & Kevin Ullyett 7-6(12), 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3”, as given in the last paragraph of the text.
