dated July 8, 1958: Nuclear weapon test

Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, speaking at a meeting held to support the Stockholm Peace Congress in Madras on July 6, stressed the need for rousing a greater volume of public opinion in Asian countries against the continuance of nuclear weapon tests by America and the Western countries. Replying to the criticism of what he called his ‘connection with the Communists,’ Rajaji stated that in facing a common danger, such as poisoning of the atmosphere through nuclear tests, everybody, irrespective of political differences, should stand united. The reason why America continued her nuclear weapon tests was, Mr. Rajagopalachari said, she was dreadfully afraid of Russian invasion. Russia, Rajaji said, had been the first nuclear power to stop unilaterally the nuclear weapon tests in deference to his appeal. Russia hoped that others would copy her unilateral action without waiting for agreement. If the nuclear powers felt that the entire world, especially the countries in Asia, were against them, they would feel the pressure of it in course of time.
