Srinath claims DS Brno title

NEW DELHI: Fourteen-year-old N. Srinath won the DS Brno chess title with a tally of 8.5 points from 11 rounds in Brno, in Czech Republic, on Sunday.

The Chennai youngster drew the final round with local Jakub Lahner to finish half-a-point ahead of Polish top seed Piotr Murdzia in the 12-player round-robin event.

Gains 53 rating points

Srinath, who made his second International Master after nine rounds, gained 53 rating points following his unbeaten run in the competition.

Supported by the Sun Group, Srinath has been promising a great deal since winning the World under-12 boys’ title in 2005. However, his progress was not in keeping with the expectations.

But Srinath’s latest performance, calculated at 2469 as against his current FIDE rating of 2220, brought out his much-hailed talent after he won six games and drew five in a field that included three International Masters.
