Rain eludes Cherrapunjee
Cherrapunjee: The monsoon magic is fading at Cherrapunjee, once the wettest place. Local people are coming to terms with a sobriquet for the region — the wet desert.
Meteorological records show that during this monsoon season the hill town, now called Sohra, received about 700 mm less rainfall till June 30. While the normal in the first 30 days of should have been 2793.9 mm, what was received was 2092.6 mm.
Officials in the Regional Meteorology Centre in Guwahati hoped that the situation would improve over the next few months of the season.
The average annual rainfall at Cherrapunjee from 1973 to 2007, a period of 35 years, was 11,952.2 mm. Below-average rainfall in two consecutive years, 2005 and 2006, pulled down the average to under 12,000 mm. — PTI
