Shivamurthy is Chamarajanagar ZP vice-president

Correspondent

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Congress candidate J. Shivamurthy was elected vice-president of the Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat for the second term on Monday.

In the morning, Congress candidates J. Shivamurthy of Ramapura ZP constituency, S. Shivakumar of Kunthur constituency, C.A. Mahadeva Shetty of Madapura constituency, Vishalakshi of Palya constituency and Radhamani of Lokkanahalli constituency filed their nomination papers.

No candidate from other parties filed nomination papers as the Congress dominates the zilla panchayat with a strength of 16 in the 19-member zilla panchayat. The Janata Dal (Secular) has two members and the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha party has one.

The Sathegala ZP seat fell vacant after Congress candidate Doreraj was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Chamarajanagar constituency.

The vice-president’s post was reserved for a candidate belonging to Group A category. The Regional Commissioner, Mysore Division, and Election Officer, M.V. Jayanthi, conducted the election.

The nomination papers of Ms. Radhamani were rejected because she did not furnish the caste certificate.

Though the papers of the other candidates were found to be in order, they were later withdrawn so that Mr. Shivamurthy could be elected unopposed.

Priority

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Shivamurthy said that he would work for the development of the district. He said he would give priority to solve the drinking water problem and health-related problems in the district.

He said he would make an effort to ensure that the benefits of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme reached the rural people through the gram panchayat.

Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat G. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner K. Vishwanath Reddy and others were present.
