CHENNAI: Salem Member of Parliament K.V. Thankgabalu has been appointed president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, replacing M. Krishnasswamy.

This is his second term as TNCC president. He had served as an elected president of the State unit from March 1997 to July 1998.

Talking to reporters at Attayampatti, he said he would strive hard to transform the party into a “rejuvenated movement” in Tamil Nadu with the support of senior leaders and workers. He was confident of receiving cooperation from all quarters. “With the guidance of party president Sonia Gandhi, I will strengthen the Congress in Tamil Nadu and realise the dreams of Kamarajar and other senior leaders.”

Mr. Thankgabalu promised to solve through dialogue any issues within the organisation. “Our efforts will be directed solely towards reviving the party and transforming it into a major political force in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Rising from the position of a block president of the party, Mr.Thankgabalu has held many important positions in the party, both in the youth and parent wings of the organisation. He was the president of the taluk, district, and State Youth Congress, and general secretary of the State unit of the party. He resigned from the post of TNCC president in July 1998 when the party high command wanted to revamp the organisation in the State. He has served as Union Minister of State for Youth Welfare in the Narasimha Rao government.
