Minjur desalination plant to be commissioned in January
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: The 100-million-litre-a-day-capacity desalination plant at Kattupalli near Minjur will be commissioned in January next year, Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin said on Monday.
Nearly 70 per cent of the work has been completed, Mr.Stalin said after reviewing the progress of the project. Dredging to facilitate laying of pipelines to draw sea water, from a depth of 10 metre below sea level, and to discharge waste water would be carried out in September and October, he said after a visit to the project site.
About 85 per cent of the work to lay a pipeline to Red Hills has also been completed.
This includes completion of work on 18 km of the 23-km pipeline from Minjur to the Madhavaram pumping station. Nearly 90 per cent of the work on the 10-km-long pipeline between Madhavaram and Red Hills has been completed.
The pipeline laying work, worth Rs.87.80 crore, is being taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, a release said.
The foundation stone for the plant was laid in February 2007.
