CHENNAI: A motorcyclist was killed when a speeding Chennai Corporation van that took the wrong lane ran over him on Triplicane High Road on Monday. In less than a year, this is the second fatal road accident involving the same driver and vehicle.

Police said K.Vageesan (34) of Triplicane, working as an Administrative Officer in a private concern, was proceeding to work on a two-wheeler when the van that came from the opposite direction hit him. The victim, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a grievous head injury and died almost instantly. He got trapped under the wheels of the motorised ladder-laden van and was dragged for about 15 feet. The van driver, S. Ramamurthy (57), was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

On October 30, 2007, the same driver allegedly crashed into a roadside tender coconut shop in the Ice House police station limits killing the shopkeeper, Muthu, on the spot. The case is to come up for trial on August 7.

“Even a couple of months ago, I saw Ramamurthy driving in a rash and negligent manner,” Investigation Officer Senthil added.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said the police would write to the Corporation Commissioner seeking appropriate action against the driver.
