soft target: The TNSTC bus that was set ablaze by miscreants at the Tirupur old bus stand on Monday. Tirupur: The police arrested two Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) activists on charges of setting ablaze a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus at the Tirupur old bus stand early on Monday. According to the police, people, on noticing a fire in the bus around 4 a.m., raised an alarm alerting the crew who were sleeping inside the vehicle. Fire and Rescue Services personnel battled for nearly an hour to put out the fire. The incident happened on the day the PMK had called for a bandh in protest against the discharge of effluents into the Noyyal river by a dyeing unit. Police reinforcements were rushed to the town. The police arrested Rajendran (38), district trade union wing secretary, and Das (44), district PMK executive committee member, for torching the bus and registered a case against them. They also arrested eight persons for forcing shopkeepers to close their shops. Cases have also been registered against Govindarajan (44), district secretary of PMK, and seven others. Five others led by Ganesan, district vice-general secretary of the party, were held under preventive detention provisions for defying regulatory orders.
