Ryots complain against loan-waiver scheme

POLKAMPALLY (Rangareddy dist.): Many farmers who either paid the instalments or interest on their crop loans on Monday complained that authorities have refused to waive their borrowings on the lines of those who had defaulted. They spoke at a ‘kisan adalat’ organised by the State BJP in this village, near Ibrahimpatnam town, to know first hand the ‘shortcomings in the implementation of the loan waiver scheme’.

They submitted signed representations to former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu, which would be presented by the party to President Pratibha Patil and Governor N. D. Tiwari.

One-time waiver

Addressing ryots, Mr. Naidu demanded a one-time waiver of loans up to Rs.50,000, irrespective of the size of the farmer’s land holding. Many farmers were rendered ineligible for the waiver due to certain guidelines issued by the RBI.

He said the BJP wanted the waiver to be universal covering ryots who paid instalments or interest, tenant farmers and those having joint holdings.

He said agriculture sector was facing a crisis and became un-remunerative due to neglect by the Government. He wanted every village covered by the crop insurance scheme.

The BJP-led NDA, if returned to power, would implement loan waiver up to Rs.50,000 for all farmers and provide loans at four per cent interest.

Later, he told reporters that the loan waiver scheme was “incomplete and unscientific”. The party would soon come out with an alternative agricultural policy to save the sector.
