40 injured as blasts rock Karachi

ISLAMABAD: At least six low-intensity bombs went off in quick succession at different places in Karachi on Monday, causing injuries to 40 people.

An unconfirmed report on a private TV channel said one person was killed. Karachi police said the bombs were intended more to cause panic in the city than destruction on a large scale.

Bombs went off in a garbage heap, back of a truck, in a taxi and another one was likely attached to a motorcycle. The police described them as “small intensity” explosions.

It was not immediately apparent who was behind the blasts. But Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city where its port is located, has a history of extremist, political and sectarian violence.

In October 2007, nearly 150 people were killed in twin bombings when the former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, returned to Pakistan after eight years in self-exile.
