‘The Shining’ to be screened

Staff Reporter

Thrissur: Horror movie fans consider Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ (1980) as a cult classic. In lists of top horror films, ‘The Shining’ appears along with ‘Psycho’ (1960), ‘The Exorcist’ (1973) and ‘Halloween’ (1978).

Kubrick’s film will be screened at the Chetana Media Institute here on Wednesday.

Based on a novel of the same title, written by Stephen King, ‘The Shining’ tells the tale of a failed writer, Jack Torrance (JackNicholson), who takes a job as an off-season caretaker of a hotel deep in the Colarado mountains.

Jack takes his wife (Shelley Duvall) andson Danny, who has telepathic skills, along.

As winter deepens, the family feels increasingly isolated and Dannysees phantasmagorical images, including scenes of a murder.

The movie was a box-office hit. It established Kubrick’s reputation as a perfectionist. He reportedly demanded hundreds of takes of certain scenes.
