ANANTAPUR: The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS) staged a road blockade on the Bellary-Bangalore highway near the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border checkpost in D. Hirehal mandal in the district on Tuesday demanding resumption of the assigned and private lands taken over by the managements of OMC and BIOP mining companies by terrorising the poor. As a result, vehicular traffic on the busy highway was disrupted for about 45 minutes with long queues of vehicles stranded on the either side. Speaking at the protest State president of APRS K. Ramakrishana, district secretary of CPI D. Jagadish, leaders of the party M.V. Ramana, A. Katamaiah, Imam, Venkatesh and others stated that about 350 acres of assigned and private lands of Dalit, down-trodden and backward classes were forcibly taken over by the OMC and BIOP with the help of musclemen and middlemen. The CPI leaders requested the Chief Minister to order an inquiry into how the assigned and private lands went into the clutches of mining companies and such lands should be resumed by the government.
