TIRUVANNAMALAI: Collector M. Rajendran inspected the underground drainage scheme (UDS) work being executed in different areas on Tuesday. In a release, the Collector said the Tiruvannamalai Municipality had been divided into three zones for the purpose of implementation of the UDS. Work has been taken up first in the second zone, comprising 39 wards. In the first phase, it has been planned to lay drainage pipes for a length of 51 km and provide connections to 12,000 houses and commercial premises in 21 wards, benefiting 67,989 people. Out of the 1,717 deep borewells planned in the first phase, 604 deep borewells have been completed. Drainage pipes have been laid for a length of 12.34 km and connections given to 2,088 houses. Estimates have been prepared for Rs.28 crore for laying pipes for a length of 54 km in the remaining 18 wards to give connections to 8,500 houses, benefiting 63,312 people in the second phase. The proposal has been sent to the government for approval. The work would begin after getting government approval. The sewage from the houses and commercial premises would be conveyed to the pumping station to be set up in Bandarakulam in Vettavalam Road, and from there pumped with the help of an electric motor through drainage pipes laid for a length of 2.7 km to reach the 8-acre land belonging to the Tiruvannamalai Municipality in Manalurpettai for treatment. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has planned to complete the first phase work by June 2009. The Collector inspected the work on the laying of underground drainage pipes in Vettavalam Road, near the travellers’ bungalow, Gandhinagar and Keezhnathur, the site of the drainage pumping station in Bandarakulam, the site for treatment of the sewage, and the connections given to the houses.
