Opposition demands Chauhan’s resignation

Seeks judicial probe into recent violence in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: Amidst uproarious scenes from Opposition parties demanding resignation of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and a judicial probe into the recent violence, Speaker Ishwardas Rohani adjourned the House, two hours after it met for the second day on Tuesday.

Soon after the House met in the morning, the Speaker adjourned it for an hour following demands from Congress-led Opposition parties for the resignation of the Chief Minister for his failure to maintain law and order and an enquiry into the violence that killed many on July 3.

Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi demanded suspension of Question Hour to discuss large-scale violence across the State during the VHP/Bajrang Dal’s shut-down call.

“There is lawlessness everywhere. People are dying. Chief Minister should resign immediately. There should be a judicial inquiry into the violence and Congress Party’s consent should be taken before appointing a judge”, she demanded on the floor.

Rejecting Leader of Opposition’s demand to suspend Question Hour, the Speaker said he was ready to allow a discussion on the matter but only after Question Hour.

When all his efforts failed to persuade the Opposition to allow Question Hour to be continued, the Speaker adjourned the House for an hour till 11.30 am.

Similar situation continued when the House resumed its meeting as Opposition parties led by Ms. Devi reiterated their demand and trooped into well raising slogans against the Government. The Home Minister, however, rejected Opposition’s allegation that the Government was involved in the violence and that people were sent to jail on false grounds.

Soon after the Home Minister’s statement, the Speaker allowed 12 Bills including Salary, Allowances and Pension of MLAs, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Leader of Opposition to be passed without discussion.
