Yeddyurappa is in favour of Netravati project: Minister

TUMKUR: Minister for Small Scale Industries and Sericulture P. Venkataramanappa said here on Monday that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was in favour of implementing the Netravati drinking water project for the benefit of the people of Tumkur district and its surrounding areas.

Speaking at public functions at Hebbur, near here, and at Pavagada in the district, Mr. Venkataramanappa said, “I recently discussed the details of the project with Mr. Yeddyurappa. The project envisages diverting a small portion of the water from the Netravati and the Kumaradhara rivers into village tanks in over 12 districts, including Tumkur.”

He said, “Mr. Yeddyurappa showed keen interest in the project and has promised allocation of the required amount to complete the aerial survey of the project. The Chief Minister appreciated the fact that the project is basically an initiative to provide drinking water.” Mr. Venkataramanappa added that he was confident of the survey establishing the feasibility of the project.

The Minister said Rs. 13 crore was spent in 2000 on a project to supply drinking water to Pavagada town and the surrounding villages from Nagalamadike (Uttara Pinakini river). The project failed due to lack of sufficient rain in the area for the last four years. He said Hemavathy river waters had been brought up to Madhugiri by laying a pipeline. “I have convinced the Chief Minister that the same pipeline could be continued up to Pavagada,” he said. He also claimed that the Chief Minister had agreed to the proposal.

The Minister launched the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation’s “Rural Transport System” at Hebbur and said over five buses would ply in 10 different routes connecting all the villages in the surroundings of Tumkur city. Rural transport would be monitored from Hebbur and controlled by the Tumkur division of the corporation, he added.

B. Suresh Gowda, Tumkur Rural MLA, said two lift irrigation plants would be set up — one at Hebbur and another at Gulur in the district.
