Meeting to discuss steps to restore monuments

D.K. Kishan Rao

Complaints of encroachment have been made: official

‘It is to bring to light the hoary past of the region’

Deputy Commissioner to inspect Malliabad excavation site

Raichur: The Raichur district administration has decided to convene a meeting of officials of the Archaeological Department here, social organisations, non-governmental organisations and prominent citizens this month to discuss the steps to be taken to restore historical and protected monuments and prevent encroachments on notified historical sites in and around Raichur city and Malliabad village.

Talking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Adoni Syed Saleem said that Raichur city was surrounded by a historical fort with valuable monuments such as Navarang Darwaza, Makka Darwaza, Kati Darwaza, a life-sized stone elephant, and a pair of ornamental elephants with remnants of a historical temple at Malliabad village.

There was a need to give proper protection to these valuable monuments and take steps to restore some of them which were in a dilapidated state now, to highlight the hoary past of the region.

In the previous years, the district administration had made efforts to restore the Navarang Darwaza and Makka Darwaza and parts of the historical fort.

He said steps had to be taken to restore other historical monuments in the city and also the ornamental elephants and other protected monuments in Malliabad village.

The Deputy Commissioner said that there were complaints that the people had unauthorisedly encroached upon some parts of the fort area and many monuments had fallen victim to vandalism due to lack of proper supervision by the department concerned.

There was a need to conduct a survey to identify historical sites and protected monuments in and around the city to restore them and give proper protection.

In the case of a historical site at Malliabad, he said the Archaeological Department had taken up excavation work at the site where it had found remnants of a Vishnu temple beside the ornamental elephants.

However, there were reports that the department had suspended excavation work and failed to give protection to the historical findings at the site.

This had encouraged vandals to deface the ornamental elephants.

He would inspect the site shortly to assess the situation and take up the issue with the department concerned to provide proper security at the historical site, he said.

On the proposal to beautify three major circles and the restoration of the Aam-Talab Lake in the city, Mr. Adoni Syed Saleem said that these issues would be discussed at the proposed meeting of the citizens and action would be taken to implement the proposals with the involvement of social organisations.
